A bullpen is a group of relief pitchers who pitch in various roles for a baseball team. The term originated from the fact that teams would store relievers in the bullpen area of a baseball stadium, often a designated enclosure behind the dugout. These pitchers are typically not part of the starting rotation and are used to relieve the starting pitcher or close out games in the later innings.

Bullpens consist of several pitchers, each with a specific role. The closer is the pitcher who takes the game-ending at-bat, usually in the ninth or final inning. They are typically the most experienced and skilled reliever on the team. Set-up pitchers precede the closer and are responsible for building a lead in the late innings.

Middle relievers pitch in non-critical situations, providing support to the starting rotation or bridging the gap between starting pitchers and the closer. Long relievers, on the other hand, pitch in extended appearances, often to start a game or fill a gap in the rotation. Teams may also employ a left-handed specialist, a pitcher who primarily faces left-handed hitters.

The use of bullpens has become increasingly crucial in modern baseball, as managers seek to optimize their pitching staffs and gain a competitive advantage. Team owners and general managers rely on advanced statistics and analytics to assemble the optimal bullpen configuration.
