Bruttoomzet, or gross turnover, is the total value of a company’s sales of goods and services during a specific period. It represents the top-line revenue generated from primary business activities before certain deductions are taken into account. In standard Dutch financial reporting, omzet is typically presented exclusive of value-added tax (VAT) and other taxes collected for the government, although the term bruttoomzet is sometimes used to emphasize the gross amount before adjustments.

Bruttoomzet is generally calculated by multiplying the quantity of goods or services sold by their invoiced prices, without subtracting discounts, returns, or allowances. From bruttoomzet, a organization may subtract items such as discounts granted, product returns, and rebates to arrive at nettoomzet, or net turnover. Thus bruttoomzet is higher than nettoomzet. VAT is usually not included in omzet figures and is accounted for separately as a tax collectible by the government.

Usage and interpretation: Bruttoomzet is a measure of the scale and volume of a company’s sales activity and is often used for benchmarking, planning, and comparing company size across periods or peers. It should not be conflated with profitability, as it does not reflect costs or net income.
