The Bronx is the northernmost borough of New York City, located on the mainland to the north of Manhattan. It is bordered by the Harlem River to the west, the East River to the southeast, the Long Island Sound to the northeast, and by Westchester County to the north. The borough includes a mix of dense urban neighborhoods and large green spaces, such as Pelham Bay Park, the largest park in New York City.

Originally part of Westchester County, the Bronx became part of New York City with the 1898 consolidation that formed the five boroughs. It developed rapidly in the 19th and early 20th centuries, then faced population shifts and economic changes in the later 20th century, and has continued to evolve into the present.

The Bronx is known for its diverse population, with significant Latino, Black, and immigrant communities. It has a rich cultural history, including the birthplace of hip hop in the South Bronx during the 1970s, as well as a strong presence in arts, music, and cuisine.

Landmarks and institutions include the Bronx Zoo, the New York Botanical Garden, and Yankee Stadium. The Grand Concourse and the Bronx Museum of the Arts are notable civic spaces, and City Island is recognized for its maritime character and seafood. Higher education institutions include Fordham University (Rose Hill Campus) and Lehman College, among others.

Economically, health care, education, retail, and services are major sectors. The borough is served by several subway lines (including the 2, 4, 5, and 6 trains), extensive buses, and expressways such as the Major Deegan Expressway and the Bruckner Expressway.
