Bronchoscopic is a term related to bronchoscopy, which is a medical procedure used to examine the airways of the lungs. A bronchoscope is a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera attached to its end. This instrument is inserted through the nose or mouth and guided down into the trachea (windpipe) and bronchi (the branching airways within the lungs).

The primary purpose of a bronchoscopic examination is diagnostic. It allows physicians to visualize the lining of the airways directly, identify any abnormalities, and collect samples for further testing. These abnormalities can include inflammation, narrowed passages, growths, or signs of infection. During a bronchoscopic procedure, tissue biopsies, mucus samples, or fluid can be obtained for laboratory analysis.

Bronchoscopic procedures can also be therapeutic. For instance, a bronchoscope can be used to remove foreign objects lodged in the airways, clear mucus plugs, or even deliver medication directly to specific areas of the lungs. In some cases, it may be used to place stents to keep airways open or to control bleeding. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia or sedation, and patients are monitored throughout. Recovery is usually swift, though some temporary throat discomfort or coughing may occur.
