Bridge segments refer to modular pieces that form a larger bridge when combined. In segmental bridge construction, the deck and supporting elements are built from a series of short, usually precast, concrete sections that are transported to the site and joined to create the full span. These segments are designed to be connected by post-tensioning tendons or grout-filled ducts, which transfer forces and create a continuous structure.

Construction methods for bridge segments commonly include balanced cantilever and incremental launching. In the balanced cantilever method, segments are erected outward from piers on both sides and courted together to form the span. In incremental launching, completed segments are progressively pushed from the end of the bridge to their final position. Precast segments reduce on-site formwork and shorten closure times, while joints between segments are typically sealed with grout and closed pours. Bearings support individual segments and accommodate movement due to temperature changes and settlement.

Materials and design considerations vary with the structural system. The most common material is reinforced or prestressed concrete, though steel or composite segments are also used. Segment geometry can represent girder, box girder, or deck segments, and joints may incorporate shear keys, dowels, and grouting to ensure transfer of forces between segments. Tight tolerances for planarity, alignment, and elevation are essential to achieve a safe and durable connection.

Applications of bridge segments include long-span bridges, viaducts, river crossings, and mountainous crossings. The segmental approach offers advantages in quality control, reduced on-site formwork, and faster construction, but requires careful planning for transportation, erection, and long-term joint durability.
