Branchecodes are standardized codes used to classify a business according to its principal activity. They function as a concise shorthand to denote the sector in which the company operates. Branchecodes are used in many countries as part of business registers, statistical agencies, tax authorities, insurers, banks, and market researchers.

The codes facilitate data organization, enable aggregated statistics by industry, support regulatory and policy decisions, and determine eligibility for certain programs such as subsidies, licenses, or procurement preferences. They can also influence risk assessment for insurance and credit purposes and improve search and matching in business directories.

Most branchecode systems are hierarchical and share common principles with international classifications such as NACE, ISIC, or NAICS. A typical code consists of a sequence of digits or letters representing increasingly specific activity categories (for example, a broad sector, a subsector, and a specific activity). Some countries maintain national adaptations to reflect local industry structure.

Assignment and updating: Companies or registries assign a branchecode based on declared or observed activity. Codes can be updated if the business shifts its main activity. Databases usually provide an official code list and a mechanism to request changes.

Limitations: Misclassification can occur when a firm has multiple activities or a recent diversification; codes may lag behind new business models. Despite limitations, branchecodes remain a key tool for organization, analysis, and governance of business data.
