Bottlemaking is the process of producing bottles, containers used for beverages, chemicals, cosmetics, and other liquids. It encompasses glass, plastic, metal, and ceramic bottles, with glass bottles historically the most common.

Glass bottlemaking uses silica-based glass; its composition typically includes silica sand, soda ash, and limestone, with small amounts of coloring agents. Recycled glass, or cullet, is added to reduce energy use and improve melting efficiency. Colors are produced by metallic oxides or other additives.

Forming methods for glass include mouth-blown bottles, press-and-blow, and blow-and-blow techniques. In modern industry, automated machines form a gob of molten glass into a blank and then blow it in a mold to create the final bottle shape. The process often includes molding in multiple stages, annealing to relieve internal stress, and surface finishing for labeling and sealing.

Plastic bottling uses extrusion blow molding or injection blow molding to form bottles from polymers such as PET and HDPE. In these methods, melted plastic is shaped by air blown into a mold, yielding lightweight, shatter-resistant containers suitable for a wide range of liquids.

Quality control and finishing are integral to bottlemaking. Inspectors check dimensions, wall thickness, and defects such as cracks, bubbles, or contamination. Automating handling, annealing, and labeling helps ensure consistent performance.

History and industry context: glass bottling originated with early glassmakers and evolved significantly with industrialization in the 19th and early 20th centuries, including the introduction of automated bottling machines in the early 1900s. Recycling, design optimization, and material innovations continue to shape modern bottlemaking.
