Botnetverkostojen, often referred to as botnets, are networks of compromised computers or other internet-connected devices that have been infected with malware and are remotely controlled by an attacker, known as a "bot herder" or "botmaster." These infected devices, called "bots" or "zombies," can be anything from personal computers and servers to smartphones and even Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

The primary purpose of a botnet is to carry out malicious activities on a large scale, often without the owners' knowledge. Botnets are typically created through various infection vectors, such as phishing emails, malicious websites, or exploiting software vulnerabilities. Once a device is infected, it becomes part of the botnet and awaits commands from the botmaster.

Botnets are used for a wide range of illegal activities. Common uses include launching distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, which aim to overwhelm a target server or network with traffic, making it unavailable to legitimate users. They are also used for sending spam emails, distributing malware, stealing sensitive information like login credentials and financial data, and engaging in click fraud or cryptocurrency mining.

The decentralized nature of many botnets makes them difficult to dismantle. The botmaster can control the bots through command-and-control (C2) servers, which can be hidden or moved frequently to evade detection by law enforcement and cybersecurity professionals. Efforts to combat botnets involve identifying and disabling C2 infrastructure, as well as educating users about cybersecurity best practices to prevent infections.
