Bostadsrättsföreningar, often abbreviated as BRF, are a common form of housing ownership in Sweden. A bostadsrättsförening is a legal entity, typically a cooperative, that owns a property, such as an apartment building or a group of houses. Individuals become members of the association by purchasing a bostadsrätt, which translates to a right to reside in a specific dwelling. This right is not direct ownership of the apartment itself, but rather a right to use and occupy it, along with the right to have a say in the association's management.

Members pay a monthly fee, known as a avgift, to the bostadsrättsförening. This fee covers the upkeep and maintenance of the property, including common areas, and often includes expenses like heating, water, and sometimes broadband. The association is managed by a board elected by the members. Decisions regarding the property, such as renovations, budgeting, and rule changes, are made at general meetings where members have voting rights. Bostadsrättsföreningar are responsible for maintaining the building's structure and external appearance. Members are typically responsible for the interior of their own apartments.
