Bosonsphoton is a term sometimes used to refer to the photon specifically when described as a bosonic quantum of the electromagnetic field. In standard physics, the photon is the quantum of the electromagnetic field and serves as the gauge boson of the U(1) symmetry underlying electromagnetism. The name emphasizes its status as a boson rather than a particle of ordinary matter.

Properties of the bosonphoton include being massless and traveling at the speed of light in vacuum. It has spin 1 and two physical polarization states (helicity ±1). It carries no electric charge, but it carries energy and momentum, described by E = hν and p = hν/c (or E = pc). As a quantum, it is described by creation and annihilation operators in quantum field theory and obeys Bose-Einstein statistics, allowing many photons to occupy the same quantum state.

Role in physics and interactions are central to quantum electrodynamics (QED). The photon is the mediator of electromagnetic forces between charged particles; these forces arise from the exchange of virtual photons in Feynman diagrams. Photons can interact with matter and with other photons only through higher-order quantum processes, so photon-photon scattering is extremely weak under ordinary conditions, though it is allowed in quantum electrodynamics via virtual electron-positron loops.

Generation, detection, and applications are widespread. Photons are produced by accelerating charges or thermally in objects with temperature, and they are detected through effects such as the photoelectric effect and various scattering experiments. They underpin technologies including lasers and fiber optics, and cosmology studies rely on the cosmic microwave background comprising a bath of photons permeating the universe.
