Borászat is the Hungarian word for winemaking. It encompasses the entire process of transforming grapes into wine, from vineyard cultivation to bottling. Hungary has a long and rich history of winemaking, dating back to Roman times, and is renowned for its diverse range of wine styles and regions.

Key elements of borászat include viticulture, the practice of growing grapes, and oenology, the science and study of wine and winemaking. Hungarian winemakers carefully select grape varietals suited to their specific terroirs, which include soil type, climate, and topography. Traditional Hungarian grapes such as Furmint, Hárslevelű, Kékfrankos, and Kadarka are widely planted, alongside international varietals.

The winemaking process itself involves harvesting the grapes, crushing and destemming them, fermentation (where sugars are converted to alcohol), aging (often in oak barrels), and finally, bottling. Different techniques and traditions are employed depending on the desired wine style, whether it's dry white wines, rich reds, or the famous sweet Tokaji Aszú.

Hungary boasts several distinct wine regions, each with its own character and specialties. Tokaj is perhaps the most internationally recognized, famous for its botrytized sweet wines. Eger is known for its robust Bull's Blood (Egri Bikavér). Villány produces full-bodied reds, while the Balaton region offers a variety of styles, including aromatic whites.
