borstkast

Borstkast is a term that is not standard in Dutch anatomy or in common usage. In most medical and educational contexts the chest is referred to as borstkas, also called the thorax. The form borstkast may appear in some texts, dialects, or as a misspelling, but it is not the accepted anatomical term.

Etymology and usage. The word combines borst (chest) with kast (cabinet), a combination that is atypical in medical vocabulary. Because borstkas is the established term for the chest cavity and rib cage, borstkast is generally considered nonstandard. When encountered in writing, it is advisable to check the source for whether the intended meaning is the thoracic region or something else, such as a misprint.

Anatomical meaning. If borstkast is used in a biological or medical context, it is most likely a typographical error for borstkas. The borstkas comprises the rib cage, sternum, and associated vertebrae, enclosing and protecting the heart and lungs and aiding respiration.

Other uses. In furniture or historical catalogs, kast means cabinet, so borstkast could hypothetically refer to a chest-like piece of furniture in dialectal or antique texts. However, there is no widely recognized furniture category by that exact name in modern Dutch.
