Bordetellosis is a bacterial disease that affects the respiratory system of various animals, most notably canines. It is caused by the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica. This pathogen is highly contagious and spreads through direct contact with infected animals or through airborne droplets expelled by coughing or sneezing.

In dogs, bordetellosis is a primary cause of infectious tracheobronchitis, commonly known as kennel cough. Symptoms typically include a harsh, dry cough that can be persistent and often sounds like a goose honk. Affected animals may also experience gagging, sneezing, and nasal discharge. While most dogs recover within a few weeks, the cough can sometimes linger.

Diagnosis is usually made based on clinical signs and history. Laboratory tests, such as bacterial culture or PCR, can confirm the presence of Bordetella bronchiseptica. Treatment often involves supportive care, including rest and avoiding irritants. In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed to help prevent secondary bacterial infections.

Vaccination is an important preventive measure for dogs, particularly those that frequent boarding kennels, dog parks, or other environments where they interact with many other animals. Vaccines are available that can reduce the severity and duration of the illness, although they may not always prevent infection entirely. Bordetellosis can also affect other species, including cats, pigs, and rabbits, where it can cause similar respiratory symptoms.
