It has its own address or sub-address and, in many contexts, can be individually rented, sold, or registered as a distinct dwelling for planning, taxation, or subsidy purposes.

In multi-unit buildings, boligenheder are the discrete units that make up the structure’s housing stock. The definition can affect occupancy rights, tenancy arrangements, and energy and utility metering, as well as eligibility for social housing or housing subsidies. The exact criteria for what constitutes a boligenhed—such as required facilities, size, or independence—vary between jurisdictions and administrative regimes. In some contexts an entire house with multiple flats may be divided into several boligenheder, while in others a large single dwelling may count as only one boligenhed.
