Boglash is a term used in speculative linguistics and folklore studies to describe a form of semantic drift in which language becomes increasingly polysemous and context dependent when framed with wetlands imagery or metaphorical landscapes. In boglash, a word’s meanings expand and blur as speakers draw on environmental metaphors such as mire, bog, and marsh to convey complexity, ambiguity, or social signaling.

Origin and usage of the term appear in online discussions and small-press essays from the late 2010s onward. It is not part of formal linguistic taxonomy and has no standing in mainstream linguistics. Proponents describe boglash as a phenomenon in which communities use environmental metaphor to regulate interpretation and group belonging, whether consciously or emergently.

Mechanisms and examples commonly cited with boglash include semantic bleaching, metaphor extension, and social signaling. A term that started with a concrete reference may acquire abstract or ironic senses, while its use in a conversation marks alignment with a particular metaphorical frame. For instance, a word linked to wetlands might come to signify entanglement in a complicated argument or bureaucratic process, with its meaning shifting across different contexts and interlocutors.

Variants and scope are discussed by some researchers, who distinguish between “surface boglash” (shallow metaphor that remains easily understood) and “deep boglash” (layered, opaque meanings).
