In this conception, a boformer combines living cells, tissues, or genetic elements with mechanical substrates, sensors, and actuators, enabling autonomous function while retaining adaptive and self-repair properties attributed to biology. Boformers are typically depicted as modular, with interchangeable bio-chemical cores or bio-mechanical limbs that can be reconfigured for different tasks.

There are two broad directions: biohybrid boformers, in which living tissue is embedded in a machine host to confer adaptability and chemical sensing; and cybernetic boformers, in which a machine or artificial body hosts living cells to provide metabolic or regenerative capabilities.
