Blåsemuskulaturen, also known as the detrusor muscle, is the smooth muscle layer found in the wall of the urinary bladder. This muscle plays a crucial role in the process of urination. When the bladder fills with urine, the detrusor muscle remains relaxed, allowing for storage. As the bladder reaches its capacity, nerve signals trigger the detrusor muscle to contract. This involuntary contraction increases the pressure within the bladder, forcing urine out through the urethra.

The contraction of the blåsemuskulaturen is a coordinated process. It is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, specifically the parasympathetic nervous system, which stimulates contraction, and the sympathetic nervous system, which inhibits it during bladder filling. The internal urethral sphincter, a ring of smooth muscle at the bladder neck, also relaxes in conjunction with detrusor contraction to allow urine to flow.

Dysfunction of the blåsemuskulaturen can lead to various urinary problems. Overactive bladder, for instance, involves involuntary contractions of the detrusor muscle, leading to a frequent and urgent need to urinate. Conversely, underactive bladder occurs when the detrusor muscle fails to contract effectively, resulting in difficulty emptying the bladder completely. These conditions can significantly impact quality of life and often require medical intervention to manage.
