Blåsemuskulaturen, also known as the detrusor muscle, is the smooth muscle layer found in the wall of the urinary bladder. This muscle plays a crucial role in the process of urination, also called micturition. When the bladder fills with urine, the detrusor muscle is relaxed, allowing it to expand and store a significant volume of fluid.

As the bladder reaches its capacity, nerve signals trigger the detrusor muscle to contract. This involuntary contraction reduces the volume of the bladder, increasing the pressure within it. Simultaneously, the internal urethral sphincter, a ring of smooth muscle at the bladder neck, relaxes. The external urethral sphincter, a voluntary muscle, must also relax for urination to occur. The coordinated contraction of the detrusor muscle and relaxation of the sphincters expels urine from the bladder through the urethra.

The strength and coordination of the detrusor muscle's contraction are essential for effective bladder emptying. Dysfunctions of this muscle can lead to various urinary problems, including incontinence, difficulty initiating urination, or incomplete bladder emptying. Conditions affecting the nervous system, such as stroke or spinal cord injury, can also impair detrusor muscle function. Medical evaluation is often necessary to diagnose and manage issues related to the blåsemuskulaturen.
