Blutgefäßverschlüsse, also known as vascular occlusions, occur when a blood vessel becomes blocked, preventing or significantly reducing blood flow. This blockage can happen in arteries, veins, or capillaries. Arterial blockages often result in a lack of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues supplied by the affected artery, leading to damage or death of that tissue. Venous blockages can cause a buildup of deoxygenated blood, leading to swelling and pain.

The causes of blood vessel blockages are varied. Atherosclerosis, a condition where plaque builds up inside the arteries, is a common culprit. This plaque can narrow the vessel lumen over time or rupture, triggering the formation of a blood clot. Other causes include embolisms, where a piece of a clot or other material travels from one part of the body and lodges in a blood vessel, and trauma that damages the vessel wall, leading to clotting. Certain medical conditions, such as hypercoagulable states (an increased tendency to form clots) and inflammatory diseases, can also predispose individuals to blockages.

Symptoms depend on the location and severity of the blockage. Common signs include pain, swelling, numbness, coldness in an affected limb, and in severe cases, tissue death (gangrene). Strokes are a type of arterial blockage affecting the brain, while deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common venous blockage in the legs. Diagnosis typically involves medical history, physical examination, and imaging techniques like ultrasound, CT scans, or angiography. Treatment aims to restore blood flow and prevent further complications, often involving medications to dissolve clots, prevent new clots, or surgical procedures to remove the blockage.
