In psychology, blocking effects can manifest in learning. For instance, if a conditioned stimulus (CS) is repeatedly paired with an unconditioned stimulus (US), and then a new stimulus is introduced and paired with the same US, the new stimulus may not become as strongly associated with the US. The original CS "blocks" the learning for the new stimulus because it already predicts the US.

In economics, blocking can occur in markets when existing monopolies or dominant firms prevent new entrants from competing. This can be achieved through various strategies such as predatory pricing, control over essential resources, or lobbying for regulations that favor incumbents. Such blocking effects can stifle innovation and reduce consumer choice.

Biologically, blocking can be seen in competitive inhibition, where a molecule similar to a natural substrate competes with that substrate for binding to an enzyme or receptor. This competition can block the natural process from occurring or reduce its efficiency. Similarly, in ecological contexts, one species might "block" another from accessing resources or occupying a niche.
