A blog, referred to in Finnish as a blogi, is an online publication consisting of discrete entries or posts, typically updated by an individual or a small group. Posts are usually displayed in reverse chronological order, with the newest at the top. Blogs commonly include features such as comments, archives, and categories to aid navigation and engagement.

The concept originated in the 1990s as a "weblog." The term weblog was popularized by Jorn Barger in 1997, and the shortened form "blog" was coined by Peter Merholz in 1999. The Finnish loanword "blogi" mirrors the English term, and many languages use a direct equivalent.

Blog platforms vary from hosted services to self-hosted installations. Typical components include posts, author information, tags or categories, an archive, and an RSS or Atom feed. Blogs are often customizable through themes and plugins, enabling different layouts and features.

Content varieties range from personal diaries and professional updates to corporate news, technical tutorials, photo blogs, and microblogs. Some blogs are dedicated to a single niche, while others aggregate opinions or news.

Blogs have influenced online publishing by lowering barriers to entry and enabling direct reader feedback. Monetization, when present, is typically through advertising, sponsorships, affiliate programs, or paid content, but many blogs prioritize information and community over revenue. Privacy, moderation, and accuracy are ongoing considerations for operators and readers.
