The blastocoel is a fluid-filled cavity that forms within the blastocyst, a structure that develops during the early stages of embryonic development in mammals and many other animals. This cavity plays a crucial role in the process of implantation and subsequent development.

The formation of the blastocoel, known as cavitation, occurs after the zygote has undergone several rounds of cell division, forming a ball of cells called the morula. These cells then begin to differentiate, and an outer layer of cells, the trophectoderm, forms. The trophectoderm cells actively pump ions and water into the interior of the morula, creating the blastocoel.

As the blastocoel expands, it pushes the cells into a crescent shape, with an inner cell mass (ICM) located at one pole. The ICM will eventually give rise to the embryo proper, while the trophectoderm will contribute to the placenta. The presence of the blastocoel is a defining characteristic of the blastocyst stage.

The fluid within the blastocoel is essential for several reasons. It helps to maintain the structural integrity of the blastocyst and facilitates the movement and rearrangement of cells within the ICM. Furthermore, the blastocoel fluid contains signaling molecules that are important for regulating gene expression and guiding developmental processes. In mammals, the blastocoel is critical for the blastocyst to hatch from the zona pellucida and to undergo implantation into the uterine wall. The expansion of the blastocoel is a key mechanism driving these events.
