Blaspheming is the act of showing disrespect or irreverence toward sacred things, such as deities, scriptures, religious symbols, or beliefs. It can be expressed through speech, writing, art, or behavior, and the seriousness attributed to blasphemy varies widely across cultures, religions, and legal systems. In some contexts, blasphemy is treated as a criminal offense or a serious moral violation; in others it is seen as a matter of religious offense or social taboos rather than a legal wrong.

The term blasphemy comes from the Greek blasphemia, literally “injury to sacred things,” formed from balp- (to harm) and phemi (to speak). Over time, the concept has encompassed both verbal expressions of contempt and actions that undermine or insult what a community holds sacred. Blasphemy is distinct from profanity (vulgar language) and from heresy or apostasy, which relate to beliefs or membership rather than to reverence toward the sacred.

Legal and social landscapes differ widely. Many Western countries have long abolished or limited blasphemy laws, emphasizing freedom of expression. In several Muslim-majority states, blasphemy statutes or punishments remain on the books and are sometimes enforced harshly. India has provisions addressing offenses against religious feelings; Ireland and the United Kingdom have reformed or repealed blasphemy provisions in recent decades. Debates continue over balancing freedom of speech with protection from religious insult, with modern disputes often occurring in public discourse, media, and online platforms.
