Blaaslediging is a Dutch term that translates to "bladder emptying" or "bladder voiding." It refers to the physiological process by which the urinary bladder expels urine from the body. This process is controlled by a complex interplay of the nervous system and the muscles of the bladder and urethra.

The bladder wall contains detrusor muscle, which contracts to expel urine. The internal urethral sphincter, composed of smooth muscle, remains closed involuntarily to prevent leakage. The external urethral sphincter, made of skeletal muscle, can be voluntarily controlled, allowing individuals to consciously decide when to urinate.

When the bladder fills with urine, stretch receptors in its wall send signals to the brain. This triggers the urge to urinate. During voluntary micturition, the brain signals the detrusor muscle to contract and the external urethral sphincter to relax. Simultaneously, the internal urethral sphincter relaxes involuntarily. This coordinated action allows urine to flow out of the bladder through the urethra.

Disruptions to this process can lead to various urinary incontinence or retention issues. Factors such as age, neurological conditions, infections, or certain medications can affect blaaslediging. Medical evaluation is often necessary to diagnose and manage any abnormalities in bladder emptying.
