Bitpufferung is a concept in digital communications that describes the intentional buffering of individual bits within a bitstream to regulate timing and improve reliability of decoding. The goal is to smooth variations in bit arrival times and align bit transmission with a steady consumption rate at the receiver.

In a typical bitpufferung arrangement, a small buffer stores bits as they arrive and releases them at a constant rate defined by the target bit rate. The transmitter and receiver may operate with slightly different clocks, and the buffer absorbs short-term timing deviations (jitter). Dynamic control of buffer size, based on observed jitter and error conditions, helps maintain a stable output stream without frequent underflow or overflow.

Implementation can be hardware-based, software-based, or a combination of both. It requires precise handling of bit boundaries, synchronization with clock recovery mechanisms, and sometimes error detection or correction to prevent data loss during buffering. Bitpufferung often interacts with higher-layer buffering strategies, such as packet or frame buffering, and with de-jittering techniques in streaming systems.

Applications are most common in real-time or near-real-time communications where smooth decoding is crucial, including voice, video, and sensor networks that rely on consistent bit timing. Advantages include reduced decoding errors due to timing variations and smoother playback. Limitations include added latency, potential buffer overflow/underflow risks, and increased system complexity.
