The tradition spread through the Roman Empire, where cakes were made of nuts, honey, and fruit. In medieval Europe, cakes were generally salted, and only the wealthy could afford sweet cakes with sugar and spices. The modern sweet birthday cake, made with flour, sugar, eggs, butter, and cake mixes, emerged in the 19th century with the industrialization of baking ingredients.
