Bipolar transistor, often abbreviated as BJT, is a semiconductor device used to amplify or switch electronic signals and electrical power. It is a current-controlled device, meaning a small change in input current can result in a larger change in output current. The name "bipolar" refers to the fact that both electrons and holes are involved in the current conduction. BJTs are constructed from three layers of semiconductor material, each doped to a different extent. These layers form two PN junctions and are typically referred to as the emitter, base, and collector.

There are two main types of bipolar transistors: NPN and PNP. In an NPN transistor, the base layer is made of p-type semiconductor material, and the emitter and collector layers are made of n-type material. Current flows from collector to emitter when a positive voltage is applied to the collector relative to the emitter and a small current is injected into the base. In a PNP transistor, the base is n-type, and the emitter and collector are p-type. Current flows from emitter to collector when a negative voltage is applied to the collector relative to the emitter and a small current is drawn from the base. The base current controls the larger collector current, establishing the transistor's amplification characteristic. BJTs are fundamental components in many electronic circuits, including amplifiers, oscillators, and logic gates. Their ability to control a large current with a small input current makes them indispensable for signal processing and power control applications.
