Biomagnifikációnak, also known as bioamplification or ecological magnification, is the increasing concentration of a substance, such as a toxic chemical, in organisms at successively higher levels in a food chain. This process occurs when organisms at lower trophic levels ingest or absorb substances, and these substances are then passed up the food chain to predators. Because the substance is not easily metabolized or excreted by the organism, it accumulates in its tissues.

As predators consume multiple prey organisms that contain the accumulating substance, the concentration of that substance in the predator's body becomes significantly higher than in the organisms at lower trophic levels. This effect is particularly pronounced for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) like DDT, PCBs, and heavy metals such as mercury. These substances break down very slowly in the environment and in living organisms, leading to their steady accumulation.

The consequences of biomagnification can be severe, especially for apex predators, which are at the top of the food chain. High concentrations of toxins can lead to reproductive problems, developmental abnormalities, immune system suppression, and even death in these animals. Humans, as top predators in many ecosystems, can also be significantly affected by consuming contaminated fish or other wildlife. Understanding biomagnification is crucial for environmental management and public health, as it highlights the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the potential for widespread contamination.
