Biokütölajit refers to different types of biomass that can be used as fuel. This biomass originates from organic matter, either recently living or from a finite past. The primary categories of biokütölajit include solid, liquid, and gaseous forms.

Solid biokütölajit are the most common and include wood and wood waste, agricultural crops and residues, and animal waste. Wood and forest residues from forestry operations or sustainable logging are significant sources. Agricultural residues, such as straw, corn stalks, and husks, are byproducts of farming. Dedicated energy crops are also grown specifically for fuel production. Animal manure and poultry litter are also utilized.

Liquid biofuels, often referred to as bio-liquids, are produced from biomass and can be used in engines or heating systems. Biodiesel, made from vegetable oils or animal fats, is a prominent example. Bioethanol, produced through the fermentation of sugars from crops like corn or sugarcane, is another widely used liquid biofuel, often blended with gasoline.

Gaseous biokütölajit, or biogas, is produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic matter, such as animal waste, sewage, or food waste. This process breaks down organic material in the absence of oxygen, releasing methane and carbon dioxide, which can be captured and used for heating or electricity generation. Biokütölajit offer a renewable alternative to fossil fuels, contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions when produced and utilized sustainably. Their diverse forms allow for a wide range of applications in the energy sector.
