Biogázelállítás, often translated as biogas production, is the anaerobic digestion of organic matter to produce biogas and digestate. Anaerobic digestion is a biological process where microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen. This process is commonly carried out in specialized enclosed vessels called digesters.

The organic materials used for biogas production can include a wide range of substrates such as animal manure, agricultural residues, food waste, sewage sludge, and energy crops. The composition of the feedstock influences the quantity and quality of the biogas produced. Biogas is primarily composed of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), with smaller amounts of other gases like hydrogen sulfide (H2S).

The biogas produced can be utilized in several ways. It can be burned directly for heat and electricity generation, upgraded to biomethane by removing CO2 and other impurities to achieve a quality similar to natural gas, or used as a vehicle fuel. The digestate, a nutrient-rich residue remaining after digestion, is a valuable byproduct that can be used as a fertilizer, helping to close nutrient loops in agriculture.

Biogázelállítás offers several environmental and economic benefits. It helps in waste management by diverting organic waste from landfills, thus reducing methane emissions from decomposition. It also provides a renewable source of energy, contributing to energy independence and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Furthermore, it can improve soil fertility through the application of digestate. The process is a key component of a circular economy, transforming waste into valuable resources.
