Biodiesel is a type of fuel produced from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled greases. It is considered a renewable fuel because the sources from which it is derived can be replenished. The production process typically involves a chemical reaction called transesterification, where triglycerides (fats or oils) are reacted with an alcohol, usually methanol, in the presence of a catalyst to produce fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), which is biodiesel, and glycerol as a byproduct.

Biodiesel can be used in diesel engines, either as a blend with conventional petroleum diesel or in its pure form (B100). Blends are commonly denoted by the percentage of biodiesel, such as B5 (5% biodiesel, 95% petroleum diesel) or B20 (20% biodiesel, 80% petroleum diesel). Using biodiesel can lead to reduced emissions of certain pollutants compared to conventional diesel, including particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and unburned hydrocarbons. However, emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) can sometimes increase.

The sustainability of biodiesel depends heavily on the source of the feedstock. Using waste cooking oil or animal fats is generally considered more sustainable than using virgin vegetable oils, which can compete with food production and require significant land and resources to grow. Biodiesel has a higher flash point than petroleum diesel, making it safer to handle and store. It is also biodegradable, meaning it breaks down more easily in the environment if spilled.
