Bindvävsvävnaden, often translated as connective tissue, is a fundamental tissue type in animals. It is characterized by its diverse cell types and an abundance of extracellular matrix, which it produces. This matrix is composed of protein fibers, such as collagen and elastin, and a ground substance, a gel-like material. The primary functions of connective tissue are to support, connect, and separate different types of tissues and organs in the body.

There are several main types of connective tissue, each with specialized structures and functions. Loose connective tissue, also known as areolar tissue, is found beneath epithelial layers and serves as a packing material, providing nourishment and support. Dense connective tissue, which has a higher proportion of fibers, is found in tendons and ligaments, providing strength and stability. Specialised connective tissues include cartilage, which provides flexible support; bone, which provides rigid support and protection; and blood, which transports substances throughout the body. Adipose tissue, or fat tissue, stores energy and provides insulation.

The cells within connective tissue include fibroblasts, which are responsible for producing the extracellular matrix, and various immune cells like macrophages and mast cells, which play roles in defense and inflammation. The composition and organization of the extracellular matrix are crucial for the specific mechanical properties and functions of each type of connective tissue.
