A bildsensor, or image sensor, is a crucial electronic component that converts light into an electrical signal, forming the basis of digital photography and imaging. It is the digital equivalent of film in traditional cameras. Bildsensoren are typically found in digital cameras, smartphones, scanners, and various other imaging devices.

There are two primary types of bildsensoren: charge-coupled devices (CCDs) and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductors (CMOS). CCDs were historically dominant due to their superior image quality, but CMOS sensors have become more prevalent due to their lower power consumption, faster readout speeds, and lower manufacturing costs.

The bildsensor consists of an array of tiny light-sensitive elements called pixels. Each pixel captures the intensity of light that falls upon it. When light strikes a pixel, it generates an electrical charge. This charge is then converted into a digital value that represents the brightness of that specific point in the image. The arrangement and density of these pixels, known as the sensor resolution, directly influence the detail and sharpness of the final image.

The color information in an image is captured using color filters placed over the pixels. The most common arrangement is the Bayer filter, which uses red, green, and blue filters in a specific pattern. The camera's internal processing then interpolates the color data from neighboring pixels to reconstruct a full-color image. The size of the bildsensor also plays a significant role in image quality, with larger sensors generally producing better performance, especially in low-light conditions.
