Bildeforensics, also known as image forensics, is a field within digital forensics that analyzes digital images to assess authenticity, provenance, and modifications. Practitioners examine metadata, sensor data, and image content to determine whether an image has been altered, reconstructed, or misrepresented, and to establish its source or chain of custody. The work supports journalism, legal proceedings, and digital investigations.

Techniques include metadata analysis (EXIF, GPS), sensor pattern noise (PRNU) to link an image to a camera, and analysis of compression and resampling artifacts to detect tampering. Content-based methods search for copy-move forgeries, splicing, lighting inconsistencies, and inconsistencies in shadows and reflections. Forensic tools may perform error level analysis, noise level estimation, and reverse image search to locate the image’s origins. Analysts combine automated algorithms with expert review and contextual evidence.

Challenges include advances in forensics-evading edits and realistic deepfakes; post-processing can erase traces; high-quality forgeries reduce reliability. Metadata can be altered, and metadata privacy may limit data access. The field has limited standardization; findings are usually presented with caveats and require corroborating evidence before court acceptance.

Applications span media verification, court evidence, platform content moderation, and historical documentation. Researchers continually refine methods and datasets; ethical considerations include privacy, consent, and the potential for misinterpretation of forensic results. Standards and best practices are evolving within digital forensics communities.
