Bernoulli refers to a prominent family of mathematicians and scientists from Basel, Switzerland, whose members made lasting contributions to mathematics, physics, and related fields during the 17th and 18th centuries. The name is attached to a number of concepts that bear their imprint, including foundational ideas in probability, analysis, and mechanics.

Jakob Bernoulli (1654–1705), often called Jakob I, was a pioneer in probability and mathematical analysis. He also contributed to kinetic theory and other applications of mathematics to physical problems, reinforcing the bridge between mathematics and the natural sciences.
