They are typically formed by the uplift and erosion of a broad area of rock, resulting in a massive, elevated block. The term "massif" itself originates from French and denotes a mass or block.

These geological formations can exhibit a variety of topographic features, including high plateaus, extensive ridges, and individual summits, but the overall impression is one of a singular, large mountainous body. The geological processes that create bergmassives often involve complex tectonic activity, such as faulting and folding, followed by significant erosion over geological timescales. Examples of bergmassives can be found across the globe, often representing the core of larger mountain systems or standing as isolated, dominant features in a landscape.
