Bergkvalitet refers to the assessment of rock mass properties relevant to engineering and geological applications. This evaluation is crucial for understanding the stability and behavior of rock formations in various contexts, such as tunneling, mining, dam construction, and slope stability analysis. Key factors considered in determining berggvalitet include the type of rock, its structural features like joints and faults, weathering, and the presence of groundwater.

Different classification systems exist to quantify berggvalitet. These systems often assign numerical ratings based on observable characteristics. For example, the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system developed by Zong-Zhi Bieniawski is widely used. It considers parameters like uniaxial compressive strength of the rock, rock quality designation (RQD), spacing of discontinuities, condition of discontinuities, and groundwater conditions. Each parameter is assigned a rating, and the sum of these ratings provides an overall RMR value, which is then correlated to rock mass behavior and support recommendations.
