Behoeftetheorieën, often translated as "need theories," are a group of psychological and organizational theories that focus on understanding human motivation through the lens of needs. These theories propose that individuals are driven to act by a desire to fulfill unmet needs, which can range from basic physiological requirements to complex psychological and social desires.

One of the most influential need theories is Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow suggested that human needs are arranged in a pyramid-like structure, with basic physiological needs (like food and shelter) at the bottom, followed by safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and finally, self-actualization needs at the top. According to Maslow, individuals are motivated to satisfy lower-level needs before pursuing higher-level ones.

Another prominent theory is the Alderfer's ERG theory, which simplifies Maslow's hierarchy into three core needs: Existence (physiological and safety), Relatedness (social and esteem), and Growth (self-actualization). ERG theory suggests that these needs can be pursued simultaneously and that frustration in satisfying a higher-order need can lead to a renewed focus on a lower-order need.

Theories of need also play a significant role in understanding workplace motivation. For example, David McClelland's acquired needs theory identifies three key needs that individuals acquire over time: the need for achievement, the need for affiliation, and the need for power. Understanding which of these needs is most dominant in an individual can help managers tailor motivational strategies.
