begrænset

Begrænset is a Danish adjective meaning "having limits" or "restricted." It is used of things with boundaries in extent, amount, duration, or scope. The opposite is ubegrænset, meaning unlimited or unrestricted. The related verb is begrænse and the noun form begrænsning.

Begrænset derives from the verb begrænse ("to limit"), which combines be- (a prefix forming a perfective or intensive sense) with grænse ("border, boundary"). The form is related to other Scandinavian languages such as Norwegian begrenset and Swedish begränsad.

In everyday language, begrænset is used for things that are not available without limit: et begrænset antal billetter (a limited number of tickets), begrænset adgang (restricted access), begrænset oplag (limited edition), begrænsede ressourcer (limited resources), begrænset tidsramme (limited time frame), begrænset rum (confined space).

In mathematics, "begrænset" describes a set or a function whose values stay within finite bounds: a mængde is begrænset if there exists an M such that |x| ≤ M for all x in the set. A function is begrænset if its image is bounded. In computer science, phrases such as begrænset hukommelse and begrænset lagerplads describe systems with finite memory or storage.
