Beglaubigen is a formal act by which a competent authority verifies and confirms certain aspects of a document for the sake of authenticity. The term is used mainly in German-speaking countries and refers to attesting either the authenticity of a signature or the correctness of a copy. Beglaubigung does not assess the content or legal validity of the document.

There are two common forms:

- Unterschriftsbeglaubigung: the authority confirms that the signature on a document was indeed made by the named person. The signer typically presents valid identification; the official notes the verification and stamps or signs the document.

- Kopiebeglaubigung: the authority certifies that a copy is a true and complete reproduction of the original document. The original is examined, and the copy is marked as genuine.

A third form, öffentliche Beglaubigung, is an official act performed by public offices (for example notaries or magistrates) under applicable law, providing a formal attestation that may be required for official procedures.

Who can perform Beglaubigungen varies by jurisdiction but usually includes notaries, public officials, and other authorities authorized by law. Beglaubigungen are commonly requested for documents such as identity cards or passports, academic diplomas, transcripts, translations, contracts, or copies intended for submission to authorities or institutions.

International use may involve additional steps, such as apostille or legalization, to ensure recognition in foreign countries.

It is important to distinguish beglaubigung from notarization (Beurkundung), which involves a broader verification of the document’s content and legal effect.
