batikkikynä
Batikkikynä is a specialized tool used in batik art, a wax-resist dyeing technique originating from Indonesia. The term "batikkikynä" translates directly to "batik pen" in Finnish, highlighting its primary function. This tool is designed to apply hot wax to fabric in a precise and controlled manner, forming the patterns that will resist the dye. Different types of batikkikynät exist, varying in their design and the size of the wax reservoir. Some are simple metal cones with a handle, while others are more elaborate, featuring internal heating elements or interchangeable tips for different line widths. The wax is typically heated in a separate container, and then poured into the batikkikynä's reservoir. As the artist draws with the pen, the molten wax flows onto the fabric, creating a barrier. Once the dyeing process is complete and the wax is removed, the areas covered by wax remain undyed, revealing the intricate designs created by the batikkikynä. The use of a batikkikynä is crucial for achieving detailed and complex patterns in traditional batik, distinguishing it from methods that might use brushes or other wax application tools.
