Electric bass strings come in several winding styles:
- Roundwound: lively texture, brighter tone with more harmonics; common and versatile.
- Flatwound: smoother feel, mellower, darker tone; less texture and brightness.
- Half-round (groundwound): a middle ground between roundwound and flatwound.
