Bassstrings are the strings designed for bass instruments, most commonly electric bass guitars and upright (double) basses. They are designed to vibrate at low frequencies to produce bass tones and are tensioned over a neck with appropriate scale length and hardware.

Construction and materials

Most bassstrings consist of a core wire with one or more windings around it. On electric basses, common materials include nickel and stainless steel, producing bright to balanced tones with varying durability. The winding can be round, flat, or half-round, which affects feel and brightness. On upright basses, strings typically use a steel core with a metal winding, and there are also gut- or synthetic-core options. Ball-end or loop-end attachments and tapering near the nut or bridge are used to optimize intonation and tension.

Types and tonal characteristics

Electric bass strings come in several winding styles:

- Roundwound: lively texture, brighter tone with more harmonics; common and versatile.

- Flatwound: smoother feel, mellower, darker tone; less texture and brightness.

- Half-round (groundwound): a middle ground between roundwound and flatwound.

Gauges range from light to heavy, influencing tension, playability, and sustain. Choice depends on playing style, genre, and desired tension at the instrument’s scale length.

Selection and maintenance

String selection considers instrument type, scale length, desired tension, and playing style. String sets are offered by manufacturers such as D’Addario, LaBella, DR Strings, and others. Regular maintenance includes wiping after playing to remove oils and sweat and changing strings as tone dulls or under-coating wear becomes noticeable.
