Basbandssignaler refers to signals that are transmitted within their original frequency band, without any modulation onto a higher carrier frequency. In essence, the signal's frequency content remains within the base frequency range of the information it carries. This is in contrast to passband signals, which are shifted to a higher frequency band for transmission.

The concept of baseband is fundamental in telecommunications and signal processing. In a baseband system, the transmitted signal directly represents the original information. For example, in a wired telephone system, the voice signal is transmitted directly over the copper wires without being modulated onto a radio frequency carrier. Similarly, in some digital communication systems, data can be transmitted directly as a sequence of voltage levels representing bits, which is also considered a baseband signal.

Advantages of baseband transmission include simpler hardware requirements as there is no need for a modulator or a corresponding demodulator for a carrier signal. It can also be more efficient in terms of bandwidth utilization for certain applications, especially when the transmission medium has a low-frequency response. However, baseband signals are generally more susceptible to noise and distortion over longer distances due to their lower frequencies. Additionally, multiple baseband signals cannot be transmitted simultaneously over the same medium without causing interference, unlike passband signals which can be separated using techniques like Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM). Therefore, baseband transmission is often employed in short-range communication or in situations where multiple signals are not multiplexed.
