A backbar is the area behind a bar that contains the storage, preparation, and display space for beverages, garnishes, glassware, and bar tools. It lies behind the customer-facing front bar and is used by bartenders to access inventory and perform service. The term can refer to both the physical structure and the equipment located there.

Typical backbar components include bottle shelves or a bottle display, a speed rail or backbar rail for frequently used spirits, glassware racks, refrigeration units for wine or beer, an ice well, a bar sink, and storage for garnishes and dry goods. Some backbars also incorporate dedicated prep spaces, cash or POS stations, and drink-making tools. The layout is designed to maximize organization and efficiency, allowing bartenders to retrieve items quickly while maintaining cleanliness and flow for service.

Functions of the backbar include storage, organization, and display; supports inventory control and stock rotation; facilitates rapid service and consistent drink preparation; and provides security for high-value stock and controlled access for staff. Lighting, branding, and signage on the backbar can enhance the ambiance and highlight premium products without direct customer access.

Variations in backbar design reflect bar type, menu, and space. In large venues, the backbar area may be separate from the main service line and include additional prep stations or cold storage. In smaller establishments, the backbar may be compact and integrated into the wall behind the bartender.
