Aðalsstétt is an Icelandic term that translates to "nobility" or "aristocracy." Historically, it referred to a social class distinguished by birth, privileges, and often land ownership. In Iceland, the concept of a formal, hereditary nobility as seen in many European countries was not as pronounced due to the island's unique social and political development.

While Iceland did not have a formal aristocracy with titles like dukes or counts, certain families and individuals held significant social and economic power. These individuals often descended from the prominent chieftains (goðar) of the Viking Age and the early Commonwealth period. Their influence stemmed from their wealth, lineage, and their roles in the burgeoning Icelandic society, particularly during the periods when Norway and later Denmark exerted control over the island.

These influential families often held positions of authority in local governance and were prominent landowners. Their status was more a reflection of their de facto power and prestige rather than a formally codified system of nobility. This social stratification existed primarily during the Middle Ages and persisted in various forms throughout the subsequent centuries, though the hereditary nature of power became less rigid over time. The term "aðalsstétt" thus captures this historical elite, even in the absence of a strict, legally defined noble class.
