Azofärgen is a broad category of synthetic organic dyes characterized by the presence of at least one azo group (-N=N-) in their molecular structure. This azo group acts as a chromophore, the part of a molecule responsible for its color. Azofärgen are among the most widely produced and utilized dyes globally, finding applications in textiles, printing inks, leather, paper, plastics, and even in food and cosmetics, though regulations vary significantly for these latter uses.

The synthesis of azofärgen typically involves a diazotization reaction followed by a coupling reaction. In the diazotization step, a primary aromatic amine is treated with nitrous acid (usually generated in situ from sodium nitrite and a strong acid) at low temperatures to form a diazonium salt. This diazonium salt is then reacted with a coupling component, which is usually an aromatic compound containing an electron-donating group such as a hydroxyl (-OH) or an amino (-NH2) group. The resulting molecule contains the characteristic azo linkage and exhibits color.

The specific color of an azofärgen is determined by the chemical structure of both the diazo component and the coupling component, as well as the presence and position of other substituent groups on the aromatic rings. By varying these structural elements, chemists can create a vast spectrum of colors, from yellows and oranges to reds, blues, and even blacks. Many azofärgen are known for their bright hues and good fastness properties, though some can be sensitive to light or washing.
