awaji

Awaji is an island located in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, administratively part of Hyōgo Prefecture. It is the largest island in the Inland Sea and lies off the coast of Honshu. The island is connected to Honshu by the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and to Shikoku by the Ōnaruto Bridge, forming part of the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway. The land is divided into several municipalities, including Awaji City and Minamiawaji City, with smaller towns and rural areas in between.

Historically, Awaji was the core of Awaji Province before the modern municipal system was established. The island experienced significant damage during the Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995, centered near Kobe. Reconstruction efforts included the development of the Awaji Yumebutai, a conference and hotel complex designed by architect Tadao Ando, conceived in part as a memorial and catalyst for regional renewal. Cultural and natural attractions, such as flower parks and scenic coastal areas, have become focal points for visitors.

The economy combines agriculture, horticulture, and tourism. Awaji onions are among the island’s best-known products, along with citrus and flowers. Tourism highlights include Awaji Hanasajiki, a large seasonal flower park, along with coastal scenery, hot springs, and cultural sites. The island remains a popular destination for day trips and longer stays, offering a mix of rural landscapes and modern infrastructure.
