Minamiawaji

Minamiawaji is a city located in the southern part of Awaji Island, in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. It was formed on April 1, 2005, from the merger of the towns of Fukura, Ichinomiya, and Minami, along with the village of Seidan. The city is situated on the southwestern tip of Awaji Island, overlooking the Naruto Strait. This strategic location has historically made it an important maritime passage.

The city is known for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. The coastline is dramatic, with many scenic spots, including the famous Uzushio whirlpools in the Naruto Strait, which are best viewed from the observation decks or during boat tours. Minamiawaji is also home to numerous beaches and is a popular destination for summer tourism.

Economically, Minamiawaji relies heavily on agriculture and fisheries. It is particularly famous for its high-quality onions, as well as its seafood, including yellowtail and sea bream. The production of traditional crafts, such as Awaji-ningyo Joruri (puppet theater) and Awaji-ware pottery, also contributes to the local economy and cultural identity.

Key attractions in Minamiawaji include the Awaji World Park NOJIMA, which offers various attractions and amusement facilities, and the Sumoto Onsen hot spring resort area, although Sumoto itself is a separate city. The city's connection to the Kashiwa Islands Marine Park is another natural highlight.
