Avtrykktaking, commonly referred to as dental impression taking, is the process of creating a negative replica of a patient's teeth and surrounding oral tissues. The impression serves as a mold for fabricating dental restorations, prostheses, orthodontic appliances, and study models. Materials and techniques are chosen to capture accurate detail, be dimensionally stable, and be well tolerated by the patient.

Typical equipment includes impression trays (stock or custom), a tray adhesive, and impression materials. Common materials are irreversible hydrocolloid (alginate), and elastomeric polymers such as polyvinyl siloxane (PVS) and polyether. Selection depends on accuracy requirements, space, and whether the impression is for single crowns, full dentures, or orthodontic devices. For edentulous arches, border molding may be used.

Procedure: after selecting a tray and material, the operator ensures the area is clean and dry. For some cases, tissue conditioning or retraction is used. The impression material is mixed and loaded into the tray, which is then seated over the prepared dentition or edentulous ridge. The patient is asked to avoid swallowing or moving. The material sets, the tray is removed, and the impression is inspected for defects before disinfection and pouring in dental stone or sending to a laboratory. Digital scanning may replace conventional impressions in some clinics.

Quality control and safety: impressions must be disinfected according to protocol to prevent cross-contamination, and stored or poured under recommended times to minimize distortion. Common issues include air bubbles, inadequate margins, or voids. Complications are generally avoided by proper technique, tray selection, material choice, and timely pouring or scanning. Avtrykktaking is performed by dentists or dental technicians in collaboration with the patient.
