Avgälde, also spelled avgälde or avgäldet in its definite form, is a historical term used in Sweden and other Nordic regions to denote a tax or levy imposed by the crown or local lords. The word stems from a root meaning to pay or render, and it carried the sense of a fixed or negotiated payment in return for protection, jurisdiction, or public services.

Forms and scope of avgälde varied by region and period. Payments could be in cash or in kind (such as grain or livestock) and were often assessed as a fixed amount per farm, household, or estate. In some cases, it functioned as a fee for the use of roads, markets, or for defense and other public obligations. Avgälde could be integrated with other feudal dues and might be tied to harvests, production, or household size, making its exact nature variable across communities.

Administration and collection typically involved local authorities, bailiffs, or manor lords who oversaw assessment and payment. Tax registers, when they survived, provide historical insight into how avgälde was levied and who was exempt or obliged to pay, including church institutions, nobility, or privileged villages.

Historical significance and decline: Avgälde served as a key revenue source for medieval and early modern states, contributing to military funding, administration, and infrastructure. Over time, as modern taxation systems developed and central administration strengthened, such feudal or regional dues were reduced or replaced by standardized property and income taxes.
